Meet Matthew

Counselling Psychologist | Advanced BWRT Practitioner

My work as a counselling psychologist is grounded in helping people feel safe, supported, and understood — essential foundations for trauma recovery. I work with individuals who have experienced muggings, violent incidents, accidents, sexual assault, or exposure to crime, supporting them in reducing distress and regaining emotional stability.

The Impact of Trauma

Trauma can leave the nervous system stuck in survival mode long after the danger has passed. This may show up as anxiety, intrusive memories, hypervigilance, emotional numbness, or a persistent sense of unease. My primary therapeutic approach, BrainWorking Recursive Therapy (BWRT), is designed to address these trauma responses at their source.

About BWRT

BWRT works with the brain’s natural processing systems to interrupt automatic trauma reactions, without requiring clients to relive or repeatedly talk through distressing events. The process is structured, contained, and gentle, allowing many people to move beyond the effects of trauma more efficiently than with traditional talk therapy.

FAQ

No. Many people who benefit from trauma-focused therapy do not meet criteria for PTSD.

You might still experience trauma-related reactions such as anxiety, panic, sleep disturbances, irritability, or avoidance  even without a formal diagnosis. Therapy focuses on your experience, not a label.

The first session serves as a starting point where you and your psychologist get to know each other a bit better. Your psychologist will then gather some information such as the reason for seeking counselling and other important details that may be related. They will then explain their therapeutic process and approach to your situation and allow space for you to ask any questions or express any expectations.

The session can be viewed as a mutual assessment where you can decide whether you will feel comfortable working with the psychologist and if you would like to start therapy with them.

Each session is 55-60 minutes

Depending on the complexity of the presenting issue, the process can range from 3 to 8 sessions.

Sessions typically take place once a week, however this may change as the therapeutic needs shift.

My session rate for 2026 is R1 350.00 for payment on the day of the session via EFT or a card payment link provided.

I will provide you with a detailed receipt for you to send to your medical aid for reimbursement (if you have medical aid funds available).

A PMB, or Prescribed Minimum Benefit, refers to a mandatory set of healthcare benefits that all medical schemes must provide to their members, covering specific medical conditions.

Under certain circumstances, I can apply for a PMB and claim directly from your medical aid (at the applicable medical aid rate). This is only an option if you meet the diagnostic criteria for one of the listed ICD 10 codes covered by a PMB. We can discuss further in your first session if it is an option. Kindly note that I claim directly from selected medical aids.

All discussions within the therapeutic setting are maintained as confidential and private. Your comfort and assurance of privacy are of utmost importance, and no information about your participation in therapy will be disclosed without your explicit written request for a release of information.

Nevertheless, it is crucial to acknowledge legal limitations on confidentiality. These limitations include situations such as when a client poses a threat to themselves or others, issues a credible threat of violence towards an identifiable individual, discloses instances of child, elder, or dependent adult abuse, or in cases where a court order mandates disclosure.

If confidentiality is a matter of concern for you, please raise it with your therapist during your initial session, and we will gladly address and discuss any apprehensions you may have.
